So far in this series we’ve discussed the rule of thirds, and drawing focus in order to get great photos of your kids. Another great way to highlight your kids on vacation is to use perspective.
Webster defines perspective as:
the technique or process of representing on a plane or curved surface the spatial relation of objects as they might appear to the eye
Another definition is the interrelation in which a subject or it’s parts are mentally viewed – also known as “Point of View”.
What does this mean in photography terms? In its simplest form, perspective is all about changing the camera’s position and or angle to get a different point of view. When photographing my kids I like to think of this as “seeing what they’re seeing”. Kids tend to by very short people; closer to the ground then most of us. If we photograph them from our full heights as adults we are seeing what we see and we will generally get a nice view of the tops of their heads. Bring the camera down a couple feet by squatting or even laying on the ground and you will gain a whole new perspective into your kids vacation activities.
